 John Wingspread Howell

I was born in a barn in rural Western New York near Buffalo-- not literally maybe but in every important way. The son of a dairy farmer father and a Holiness evangelist mother, my lot was cast:
  • to forever have an inferiority complex,
  • to be an incurable and undaunted Buffalo sports fan and a fan of all underdogs in sports and life in general,
  • to be always on some sort of spiritual quest, or battle, or both at the same time,
  • to be drawn to the land, to nature, and geographic solitude
  • to be drawn to the city, to arts and culture, to the finer things in life, and all things not related to farming or legalistic world-denying religiosity
  • to have a pressing need to be traveling somewhere most of the time
  • to have plenty of material to write about.

My brother, David Allen Howell, six years my junior, is the successful member of my family. He is Vice President of Global Services at Westinghouse Electric Company. He makes more money in a year than I've made in a lifetime.

After living in Oklahoma, Colorado, and Santa Fe, I now live in Metro Chicago where I have lived longer than my total years in Greater Buffalo, or anywhere else (see Places). Still...
  • My Buffalo roots and loyalties are deeper,
  • Other than Buffalo, the California Coast or any seashore, Paris, or Santa Fe, I'd rather live in Chicago than anywhere.
  • Since Easter Eve 2000, I have been a Roman Catholic, but go to my The Theologian section on this site and everything there before drawing any conclusions about my beliefs.

I have the soul of a writer but have found an extremely stimulating way to use my writing and creative talents to help people improve their lives and increase their success as a speaker and consultant to corporations, organizations, and indivduals. See The Speaker.

I have appeared as an author and/or expert on various local affiliates of NPR, PBS, CBS and ABC and on the Mancow Show, a poppular syndicated national talk radio program hosted by Mancow Muller.

I also indulge my creative spirit as an entrepreneur. Here's information on my latest venture designed to help revive my home city of Buffalo.

And although I spent the first decade of my career as a protestant clergyperson, there's still a theologian in there somewhere, crying to get out.

Here are my best reasons for getting up in the morning:

My miracle daughter, Marivi.  My wife, Maria Cecilia.
